The HETI Higher Education Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry is an accredited RANZCP Formal Education Course designed for Stage 1 and Stage 2 psychiatry trainees.
Grounded in the realities of psychiatry training and connected to the NSW Health context, the course provides a structured and flexible learning pathway across Years 1, 2 and 3.
Students enrol in one integrated unit per semester, with topics mapped to the RANZCP syllabus and learning supported by live teaching, delayed viewing options, experienced psychiatrist educators and qualified psychiatrist leads for each year of the course.
The course also integrates support for RANZCP assessments, helping trainees connect formal education with clinical practice, exam preparation and broader training requirements.
The HETI Higher Education Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry is designed for trainees who need a structured, accredited and practical education pathway that supports their progression through psychiatry training.
As an accredited RANZCP Formal Education Course, the program provides learning that is mapped to the RANZCP syllabus and aligned with the needs of Stage 1 and Stage 2 trainees.
The course is delivered through one integrated unit per semester and is revised each year to reflect the needs of psychiatry trainees. Learning is supported by experienced psychiatrists, clinical leaders and qualified psychiatrist leads for each year group.
Students value the flexibility of the course, including live teaching with delayed viewing options, focused learning sequences and, for Stage 2 trainees, the potential to align unit selection with current placement experiences and training goals, with support of workplace and Director of Training.
Unlike many traditional university models, the HETI Higher Education course also integrates support for RANZCP assessments throughout the learning journey. This includes exam-focused sessions and broader support for assessment readiness, scholarly project development and practice-based learning.
The Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry is designed around the way psychiatry trainees learn, work and progress through training.
Assessment support is built in RANZCP assessment preparation is integrated throughout the course. Students are supported to prepare for key assessment requirements while building the knowledge, clinical reasoning and reflective capability needed for psychiatric practice.
Learning is structured and manageable The course uses focused learning sequences to help trainees engage with related topics, consolidate knowledge and connect learning with clinical practice across the semester.
Flexibility supports real training pathways Students can access live teaching and delayed viewing options. For Stage 2 trainees, there may also be flexibility to undertake Year 2 and Year 3 units in an order that aligns with placement experiences and learning goals, with support of workplace and Director of Training.
Teaching is grounded in practice Students learn from experienced psychiatrists and mental health leaders working across public and private settings. The teaching is practical, contemporary and connected to the clinical environments trainees are working in.
Support extends beyond exams The course supports trainees with more than exam preparation. Students can also access guidance that supports scholarly project development, reflective practice and progression through training.
The Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry is delivered across six semester-based units over Years 1, 2 and 3.
Students enrol in one integrated unit per semester, with each unit designed to support a different stage of psychiatry training.
All semesters run for 20 weeks. For Years 2 and 3, this includes a two-week mid-semester break to support reflection, consolidation and catch-up on learning tasks.

Students are expected to attend 75% of teaching sessions, either live or by viewing recordings, or to meet relevant RANZCP training requirements.
The HETI Higher Education Postgraduate Course in Psychiatry integrates support for RANZCP assessments throughout the learning journey.
Assessment preparation is built into relevant units and may include support for MCQ preparation, essay preparation, the Psychotherapy Case, scholarly project development and other training-related requirements.
This approach helps trainees connect what they are learning with clinical reasoning, reflective practice and the assessment expectations of psychiatry training.
The course is taught by experienced psychiatrists and mental health professionals who bring real-world clinical knowledge into the learning environment.
