Advanced standing

Advanced Standing Credits

Advanced standing (also known as recognition of prior learning) is the formal recognition of an individual’s prior knowledge, skills and understanding. Advanced standing can provide credit towards a student’s postgraduate study and reduce their workload.

Applications for Advanced Standing must be made by the published application closing date of two weeks prior to the start of the Semester.

Applications for Advanced Standing must be made using the Advanced Standing Application Form, which is uploaded as part of the admissions application process. Note: Advanced Standing can only be applied for admission into an award course.

How to complete the form

You will need to map the learning outcomes of your previously studied units against the learning outcome of the HETI units for which you are seeking advanced standing. You may need one page per unit.

Additionally, certified copies of the academic transcripts; extracts from institutional handbooks or other official documentation is required. All supporting documentation must be in English, including certified translations where necessary.

View Persons who can Verify Documents for information on who can certify and guidelines, for certification of documents.

Assessment of applications based on informal learning may take longer than applications based on formal or credentialed learning.

Normally, the maximum Advanced Standing that can be granted towards a postgraduate course is 50% of the total credit points for the course, except as provided for in the HETI Higher Education Advanced Standing Policy, Clause 18.

Advanced Standing in specified units is not normally granted for studies completed 10 years or more prior to application.
