Physical health, mental health, and ill-health have a complex interrelationship. In this Unit you will be introduced to core facts regarding the physical health of people experiencing mental ill-health, by exploring the complex interactions, and models to improve physical health in the context of mental ill-health. The mental ill-health aspects of physical ill-health will also be explored. Key elements of assessment of the physical health of those living with mental-ill health, including innovative solutions for improvement of physical health will be addressed with an opportunity to explore this within your role/specialisation. Improving physical health of people experiencing mental ill-health is everyone’s business.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the unit, students will be able to:

  1. Evaluate contemporary examples of improvement and innovation in health care with respect to the interface of physical and mental health.
  2. Demonstrate enhanced judgement regarding the impact of socio-economic, political, gender, spiritual and cultural contexts upon physical outcomes for those living with mental ill health.
