Carmen has extensive experience in the higher education and healthcare sectors, which includes over 15 years of higher education teaching and leadership in nursing and medical education and over a decade of clinical expertise at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney. Carmen completed her PhD (Medicine) at Sydney Medical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. She received a Research Training Fellowship from the NSW Institute of Psychiatry and has presented research findings at national and international conferences.
Carmen worked as an academic for twelve years at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS). Her previous role was Course Director for postgraduate studies in the Faculty of Health, UTS. She has extensive experience in curriculum design and development, course accreditation, governance, people management and transformational leadership. She has expertise with online learning delivery and classroom simulation. Carmen formally worked for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) in the role of Medical Education Officer where she led the implementation of the RACP’s education program known as the ‘Physician Readiness for Expert Practice program’ in NSW and ACT.
Carmen has peer reviewed book chapters and journal articles for several journals. Carmen’s publications cover the topics of online education, learning analytics, classroom simulation, mental health and wellbeing, physician psychiatric morbidity and burnout, cardiopulmonary transplantation and ventricular assist devices. She is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer with the School of Nursing & Midwifery, University of Technology Sydney.
