Leadership is intrinsic to the role of a psychiatrist, but the manner this role is undertaken will vary markedly: influenced by many factors, and with varied alignment with the leadership style others provide or seek. This Unit will introduce you to core concepts that need to be considered in developing your own leadership style as a psychiatrist; and undertake a leadership activity that you may use to further develop your leadership skills. Satisfactory completion of the Unit will fulfil the requirements of a formal leadership and management training course, as accredited by the RANZCP NSW Branch Training Committee.
Audience: NSW Stage 3 Psychiatry trainees, their supervisors and potential supervisors

Enrolments for 2025:
1) February 10th – September 1st 2025 – enrolment closed July 7th. 2) August 4th 2025 – February 16th 2026 – students may enrol anytime up to January 31st 2026.
Enrolments for 2026:
Will open January 20. Courses will be offered in two intakes:
1) February 9th – August 31st 2026 – students may enrol anytime up to July 6th. 2) August 3rd 2026 – February 15th 2027 – students may enrol anytime up to January 31st 2027.

Learning Outcomes
1. Describe the application to the RANZCP Manager Fellowship Competencies to the trainees’ future practice and professional development plans
2. Demonstrate the ability to apply selected leadership concepts to improve mental health care
The course will consists of 5 topics accessed through the myHETI learning management system, with an accompanying Learning Activity Journal to be completed by the trainee in conjunction with an approved RANZCP supervisor. The course is based on the recommended content of the RANZCP Guideline for leadership and management in psychiatry and is available through self-enrolment from 23 May 2022.
It is estimated that the combination of online and Learning Activity Journal activities will require 25 hours to complete.

If I am a supervisor, how can I use the course for RANZCP CPD?
The manner a psychiatrist chooses to engage with the course will influence which CPD category that could be claimed. RANZCP guidelines should be referred to.
How long should I allow to complete the course?
It is expected most participants will complete the activities over one to two months.
How long am I enrolled for?
There will be an annual review of enrolments to remove inactive students.
