This unit examines relevant social determinants of health that affect the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, families and communities from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds as well as culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, communities identifying as LGBTQIA+, people with disability and other groups with emerging identities. We will identify and examine concepts related to culture, cultural diversity, difference and ‘the Other’ as well as specific concepts of social and emotional wellbeing along with a range of mental health indicators for specific communities. We will highlight the specific needs of individual and communities and build mental health practitioner competencies to begin to work more effectively with these communities in supporting their mental health needs.
