Supporting individuals with anxiety and mood disorders requires a compassionate approach grounded in evidence-based strategies.
The Anxiety and Mood microcredential unit at HETI Higher Education equips students with the knowledge and skills to implement such strategies effectively.
This five-week program delves into anxiety and mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder, emphasising recovery-oriented and strengths-based approaches. It can be studied as professional development (no assessment) for 20 hours or for microcredential or award study for 50 hours.
Here are five key evidence-based strategies taught in the course:
Recovery orientated practice shifts the focus from deficit to strengths and empowers those with anxiety and depression. By identifying and building upon personal strengths, individuals can regain a sense of control and purpose. The Anxiety and Mood unit guides students to incorporate these approaches into their practice, promoting resilience and long-term well-being.
CBT is a well-established, effective treatment for both anxiety and depression. It involves identifying and challenging negative thought patterns and behaviours, replacing them with healthier alternatives.
By learning CBT techniques, students can help individuals recognise distorted thinking and develop coping mechanisms to manage their symptoms.
Mindfulness practices, such as Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), have been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
These interventions focus on cultivating present-moment awareness and acceptance, helping individuals respond to stress more effectively. Incorporating mindfulness into treatment plans can enhance emotional regulation and overall well-being.
Engaging in regular aerobic exercise, such as walking, jogging, swimming, or cycling, has been proven to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
Physical activity releases endorphins, which are natural mood enhancers, and can improve sleep quality and self-esteem. Students learn to integrate exercise recommendations into comprehensive treatment plans.
Understanding the personal experiences of those with anxiety and mood disorders is crucial. The Anxiety and Mood unit emphasises psychoeducation and explores lived experiences, enabling students to appreciate the subjective aspects of these conditions.
This approach encourages empathy and enhances the ability to tailor interventions that resonate with individuals' unique experiences.
Enrolling in the Anxiety and Mood microcredential unit at HETI Higher Education provides professionals with practical skills and knowledge to support individuals living with these conditions. The unit's emphasis on evidence-based practices ensures that students are well-prepared to make a meaningful impact in mental health care.
By completing this unit, clinicians can competently support individuals in managing anxiety and mood disorders.
