You’re juggling a lot, running community programs, engaging with stakeholders, responding to emerging health trends, and delivering clear messages that make an impact. When it comes to adding professional development into the mix, it’s easy to feel like there’s just no time.

Sound familiar?

For many health promotion professionals, professional development often ends up on the “when things settle down” list. But what if gaining deeper mental health expertise didn’t mean hitting pause on your career or life?

At HETI Higher Education, we understand the real-world pressures professionals face. That’s why our applied mental health microcredentials are designed to fit into your world, not the other way around. They’re short, flexible and built for people who care deeply about what they do.

“I know I need to stay up-to-date, but where do I start?”

You’re not alone in feeling this way. One of the most common hesitations we hear is simply not knowing where to begin. With so many options available—from webinars to full postgraduate degrees—it can be hard to gauge what’s going to be worth your time.

HETI Higher Education’s microcredentials offer a grounded, practice-informed approach to mental health study. These short, focused study units are developed by experts in the field and structured to provide immediate relevance to your work in health promotion.

Whether you’re working on early intervention campaigns, community wellbeing strategies or youth-focused programs, our applied learning model means you’ll walk away with knowledge you can use straight away.

Choose your time commitment and outcomes

All professional development microcredential units at HETI Higher Education can be completed in one of two ways—20 hours or 50 hours—depending on your capacity and goals.

  • If you’re looking for professional development only, all microcredential units can be undertaken with a 20-hour time commitment. This allows you to build understanding in a specific area without formal assessments.
  • If you want to earn academic credit (or think you might in the future), a 50-hour time commitment for each microcredential unit includes assessment and meets requirements for building toward a Graduate Certificate or higher award. Yes, we know assessments take time—but they also help deepen learning and give you a clear pathway to recognised qualifications.

Short course study without the overwhelm

If the words “professional development” make you picture late nights, long readings, and yet another thing on the to-do list, it might be time to rethink what study looks like.

Each HETI Higher Education microcredential runs over just five weeks and is delivered online. That means no travel time, and the flexibility to study when and where it suits you. Designed for people who work full-time (or close to it), the structure is intentionally streamlined to help you maintain momentum without stretching yourself too thin.

There are two types of study units to choose from, depending on your time and goals:

1. Knowledge Units
If you’re short on time but want a solid grounding in key concepts, a  Knowledge unit could be just right. These are fully online and self-paced. You can dip in and out when it suits, making it easier to balance with your workload and other commitments.

Popular with those who want a fast, clear understanding of a topic, without formal assessments (for professional development only students), Knowledge units still contribute to professional development hours and can spark new ideas for your programs or campaigns. The workload of these units can be spread across two teaching periods (12 weeks), rather than the usual five weeks, better accommodating busy workloads and lives.

2. Foundation and Enhance Units
For those ready to dive a bit deeper, our Foundation and Enhance units offer a more in-depth exploration of specific mental health areas. These five-week units do include one assessment (professional development only students don’t complete this), but are carefully paced with weekly modules, optional online discussions, and support from our teaching staff.

They’re perfect if you're looking to build on prior learning, explore a new population group (like perinatal, child and youth, adult, or older persons mental health), or work towards a formal qualification down the line. You can even stack multiple microcredentials towards a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma.

“What if I fall behind?”

It’s a fair question, and a common one. Many professionals worry that if something urgent comes up at work, study will fall by the wayside. That’s why we’ve built flexibility into every unit. Miss a live session? Recordings are available. Interested in a stackable credit unit and need extra help with the assessment? Student support is included.  If you are a professional development only student, you must complete a brief reflection in order to receive a certificate of participation. Assessment is required for a microcredential.

And because you’re studying with a cohort of other professionals, including peer workers, nurses, and fellow health promoters, the online forums become a space to exchange ideas, talk through challenges, and keep each other going.

This sense of shared learning often becomes one of the most valued parts of the experience. Our students frequently tell us they’ve applied something they’ve learned that same week in a meeting, project or team discussion.

Ready when you are

You can start with one unit and see where it leads. Some of our students complete a single Knowledge unit each quarter, using it to inform their practice and guide future professional development. Others begin with a Foundation unit and realise they’re ready for more.

There’s no one way to approach this—just the option that works best for you, right now.

So, if you’ve been putting off professional development because of time, or confidence, HETI Higher Education’s applied mental health microcredentials might be the practical next step.

Flexible. Focused. And designed for people just like you.
