How HETI Higher Education Prepares Health Professionals to Act
Older adulthood brings life experience, wisdom, and often, social challenges. As people age, shifts in health, mobility, and relationships can mean fewer opportunities for meaningful contact. This social isolation can deepen emotional distress and quietly set the stage for serious mental and physical health issues.
Having worked alongside older Australians for several years, I’ve seen how meaningful connection can influence a person’s day-to-day experience, and their broader outlook. The microcredentials are designed to help professionals deliver care that honours wellbeing in its fullest sense, not just as the absence of illness but as presence of belonging and engagement. ” Claire Maddox, Older Persons Academic Lead.

Data from Australia and beyond highlights the rising prevalence of social isolation among older adults. Estimates show that up to 15% of Australians aged 15 and over experience social isolation, with older adults particularly at risk. This isolation can stem from loss, mobility limitations, rural remoteness, or reduced social roles.
Researchers have linked prolonged isolation to depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, cardiovascular risk, and even premature mortality. One longitudinal study noted that depression sometimes mediates the pathway from social disconnection to subjective cognitive decline.
Given this, professionals supporting older people must be equipped with approaches that address both the emotional and social dimensions of later life.
At HETI Higher Education, our Older Persons specialisation emphasises person-centred, recovery-oriented practices, not merely treating symptoms but understanding each individual’s life context and resilience. Our curriculum reflects this:
All microcredential units are offered over 5 weeks as 20-hours for professional development, or 50-hours if you wish to earn academic credit.
Across the Older Persons curriculum, students build awareness and practical skill:
1. Understanding Core Changes - Explore how psychological, cognitive, and social shifts in ageing affect emotional wellbeing and social engagement.
2. Personal Ecology & Social Context - Map an older person’s environment, relationships, and support networks to inform meaningful interventions.
3. Dementia and Behavioural Changes - Recognise how symptoms of dementia influence isolation and capacity to stay connected.
4. Grief and Loss - Support older adults through bereavement and social role transitions that impact mental health.
5. Person-Centred Intervention Design - Develop tailored care plans that integrate social connection, engagement, and community resources.
Throughout, students are encouraged to draw on real-world examples and reflect on integrating theory into practice in their own professional contexts.
Through our Older Persons curriculum, health professionals learn:
